Who Should We Get To Replace Ronaldo?
By: Wayne Farry | June 11th, 2009
He’s going, no doubt about that. In some cases, players struggle to agree personal terms with a club after a fee is agreed but don’t expect that to happen here. He’s dying to go to Madrid and they’re dying to have him, a match made in crude, over-exposed heaven.
So, in theory, we have £80M/€93M to play with. And hopefully we have it all to spend, if the Glazers have a bit of sense they’ll reinvest the money back into the transfer market, if not, they’ll face the wrath of us, the fans.
So who do we buy to replace the guy? We’ll have to replace him with more than one player. Not because we can, with the money but because Ronaldo, although jus one man, was far more than just one player. The guy had the attributes of a world class striker/winger and attacking midfielder. If we want to properly replace we need to buy at least two world class players; a winger and a striker.
We’ve been linked with everyone from Ribery to Benzema to Antonio Valencia even before this offer was accepted. Ribery will be expensive and so will Benzema but Valencia could be bought for under £20M.
So who do you think we should buy to replace a man who, in terms of what he delivers on the pitch, cannot be replaced by one player? Leave all your comments below.

What will be the likelihood they use this cash to buy tevez outright and splash out for ribery?

I think they should go for David Villa and David Silva. Who knows, they might even get a good deal for buying both at once.

Very interesting analysis Colin, thanks for sharing! Am I correct in thinking though that the £600M debt that we have is entirely credit that the Glazer’s used to buy the club?

In July 2006 the club announced a refinancing package. The debt taken on by the Glazers to finance the club was split between the club and the family, approximately £256 million is secured against Manchester United’s assets.
The total amount is £660 million, on which interest payments are £62 million a year.

So yes? We didn’t have the debt before right?

We obviously had some debt before hand, although not to the entent that the Glazers brought on. But only (!) £256 million is technically on United’s books, the other half is taken on by Glazer’s holding company.

More interesting comments from The Times…
“Remarkably, it took United only two hours to agree to Real’s offer for Ronaldo. David Gill, the United chief executive, was making his way to Geneva for a meeting with Fifa officials when his office received a fax from the Spanish club at about 6pm on Wednesday. Sources close to Gill insist that there was no warning from Real that a bid would be forthcoming.
Gill telephoned Ferguson first, then contacted Ronaldo’s camp, before the matter was taken to the Glazer family, the club’s owners, who insisted that the ultimate decision rested with Ferguson, at which point the manager gave the green light to sell the Portugal forward.”

“It is understood that United will receive the fee in four annual instalments of £20 million. Sources close to the Glazer family insist that Ferguson will be free to reinvest the money on players, despite the club being faced with an interest bill of £69 million last year on their £699 million of debt.”

So if its in instalments does that mean we can’t spend it all this summer as everyone has been speculating?

Wesley Sneijder would be a good buy cause of all the “offensive talent” RM is buying up.. soon they will have full team of attackers and will have to sell… and he has a very good free kick

Colin, interesting that the Times is saying it is 4 installments of 20m. I read an article in the Daily Mail that said ManU were getting a flat one-off fee which I interpreted to mean all 80m at once. The article said that Ferguson has been given assurances that he will have $100m to spend, (the 80m transfer fee + the annual 20m he was already promised).
I would be interested in raiding France FC for Snejder and Robben (but only if we have an equal quality backup for him) since I think we could get them on the cheap if they are going to spend 250m this season.

I think the fact that it said it was an ‘unconditional fee’ means that it’s all the money upfront.

According to what i see, i think united should settle and think of the next season because we have players who can do it infact if possible “Babar” should also go and keep “tevez”. Nani can still produce the quality and Fagie should give him a chance also Rooney is able to lead his team to glory.According to my opion here is my team for the next season.

ronaldo leaving will not ave an impact on man u keeping the premier league cup next season
but i think they should try and buy kun aguero from atletico madrid
antonio valencia and why wouldnt we even try and get messi from barcelona, he could replace ronaldo and at least he wouldnt think he is better then the club like ronaldo didPosted from

i say let ron go he’s more of an actor than a player yh he scored great goals but then he also didn’t seem to put enough effort in in some cases. for me well i got a couple of ideas rollin around. get messi for the whole £80m or get a few with the money maybe start lookin for ramos as replacement for neville along with valencia or look at some of newcastle’s players????we could invest in micon but i can’t see it happening where as if we offered middlesbrough money for downing i think it could work only time will tell i guess

Ronaldo is going but to i don’t see why the should even replace him b’se to me Nani can as good as Ronaldo or even better than only that he needs a very special advice to make actual be the best player coz to me i see him determined the coming season.
