Giggs Named Player Of The Year!
By: Wayne Farry | April 26th, 2009It was announced tonight that Ryan Giggs has been named PFA Player Of The Year!

The 35 year old beat off competition from team-mates VDS, Nemanja Vidic, Ronaldo and Rio, as well as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
I want to first of all congratulate the legend that is Giggsy for winning an award that he should have won years ago. Also, this post is purely to celebrate his win so I’m not going to go into whether this was actually a reward for his whole career (think Scorsese winning the Oscar for The Departed) or that Vidic deserved it more, because right now we need to celebrate this.
Here are a few words from the man himself:
”It’s right up there, with personal accolades it’s the best to have as it’s voted by your fellow players.
”I’ve been fortunate to win a lot of trophies, I won the young player award twice, but this is the big one.”
The Welsh Wizard has enjoyed an incredible career with United, picking up more trophies than most clubs, let alone players.
Let’s remember what I think is his greatest moment in a red (or in this case white) shirt.

Shows how biased towards Man Utd the media and most of England is… Does anyone actually believe Giggs had a better year then some of the players on the list, or ones that didnt even get on the list? I like the guy but it is pretty ridiculous. SAF says he should win, and win he does…

umm yea im serious (if you are talking to me- if you are questioning the situation then my bad)… The guy has less goals and assists then Denilson- who most Arsenal fans would say has been nothing special this year… Comparing him to Gerrard? Laughable. He is a great guy and leader and was a great player but this award is a joke

No MoMoney i was definitely agreeing with you, I was saying are you serious to him winning that joke of an award. definitely feel like gerrard was leaps and bounds a better player.

Remember that this award is voted on by the players. The media may indeed be biased towards most things red but that has little do do here.
Go on old dudes! More players with 35+ years still productive: http://blog.corvallissoccerblog.com/2009/04/older-soccer-players-still-competing.html

Damn I cant verify this yet but the grapevine says Gerrard voted for Giggs as well.

As Wayne said maybe the players felt he deserved the award for his career rather than this season in particular, he might not have another chance. Also don’t forget that votes for this award are made in January, he was quite impressive at the start of the season.

Oh if the players vote for it then its a completely different story…

That’s what I think it was. I personally think that Vidic was a more suitable candidate but if the players voted for Giggs then there’s little that can be done..

“35 year old beat off competition” – Really Wayne? Subtle inappropriate references aside, as soon as I saw that Giggsy was voted POTY, I figured that this would be the reaction.
I definitely agree that it was more of a limetime achievement award than anything else, although I really like the idea of Giggs running a Chris Bosh-esque campaign to win the award…

Ha, I was waiting for someone to notice that, if you look closely there tends to be an edge of filth to most of my writing.
And yeah, this was the expected response, but I think it was inevitable for Giggs to win it.
Oh, and Taylor, did Bosh make the All-Star team that year?

Yeah… I think he was the leading vote getter…

Ok so there are reason to why giggs shouldn’t have won, how ever this is an award is voted for by the players. The results of it must show that he is massively respected and his talents are appreciated. I think this award makes up for the years that he should have won it. This was not his best year, however he should have got 1 years ago.I would love to have seen a life time achievement award, as he is a model footballer on and off the pitch, and there’s very few of them!
