Yann M’Vila Wants to Play for Us!
By: Ivor | January 21st, 2011
I despise Liverpool F.C.. with every fiber of my being. So when a phenomenal young French footballer, Yann M’Vila, asked about a £16m Liverpool offer for his services tells L’Equipe that “Manchester United is the club of my dreams!” I am impressed right away. Watched over the last month by the Red Scousers Director of Football Damian Commoli, José Mourinho’s assistant at Réal Madrid, José Moraís, and United scout Jap Staam, M’Vila has been brilliant.
Six foot tall and muscular, M’Vila, who will turn 21 in June, has been a revelation for Rennes in Ligue 1 this season after usurping the defensive central midfield position from the highly regarded Japanese Junichi Inamoto. Indeed, his superb defensive ability, natural sense of positioning, precision tackling and pure physical strength led to an international call-up for Les Bleus.
After spending five seasons at Amiens SC as a boy, M’Vila left for Paris to join F.C. Nantes. Unhappy living with his Congolese grandparents in the dope and crime-infested world of Clichy-sous-Bois, M’Vila was happy to be discovered by a scout from the prestigious Stade Rennais academy in October 2004. His teammates in the youth system included fellow prospects Damien Le Tallec, the younger brother of Anthony Le Tallec, Yohann Lasimant, Abdoul Camara, and the little Algerian magician, Yacine Brahimi. The combination of M’Vila, Brahimi, Camara, and Le Tallec, won the Tournoi Carisport tournament, followed by the Coupe Gambardella in 2008.
In August 2009, when Rennes’ regular holding midfielder Junichi Inamoto went down injured in a pre-season friendly, M’Vila was picked by new coach Frédéric Antonetti. Indeed, since making his debut in the season opener against Nice, M’Vila has been a regular.
Also a regular for national under-21 team, M’Vila was named to the 30-man preliminary list by Raymond Domenech to play in the 2010 F.I.F.A. World Cup but failed to make the final 23. In retrospect, of course, the biggest favor Domenech could have done for the lad was to leave him out.
On 5 August 2010, M’Vila was officially called up to the senior national team for the first time by new manager Laurent Blanc for the team’s friendly match against Norway. He earned his first senior cap in the match starting in the defensive midfielder role. Despite France losing 2–1, M’Vila earned rave reviews for his performance with many media outlets in France crediting him with being the team’s best player of the mach.
Rowdy Robby Herbin, the Nobby Stiles of French football in my youth, and probably the wisest of pundits, feels that this generation of central midfielders featuring Blaise Matuidi, Moussa Sissoko, Namplays Mendy and M’Vila, followed a year on by Geoffrey Kondogbia and Manchester United’s own Paul Pogba are about to set the soccer world on fire. So, just to see the disturbed look on the sour mugs of King Kenny and his lickspittle Commoli, I say, “Fergie, sign ‘im up!” And I wouldn’t mind that Yacine Brahimi, either.
