We’ve come a long way
By: Shaun | May 10th, 2011
The season isn’t over yet of course. We still have 2 league games remaining on our schedule in which we need to secure 1 point to clinch the title. We then have to prep for the massive encounter against Juventus on May 24th for Gary Neville’s testimonial. After that, there’s the little matter of a Wembley date against some team from Spain. Not sure if that game means anything…
All jokes aside, I was browsing through posts from the first couple months of the season and was reminded how poor we were to start the year. The middle of October was particularly bleak after we achieved our 5th draw in 8 games against West Brom. It was definitely not the stuff of champions especially if the competition played to the level they’ve had in season’s past. Yet this season has been a completely different one with the gap between the top teams and the ones in the middle rapidly closing with United looking to win the title with the lowest number of total points by a champion in a while.
A few days later, United fans were stunned by revelations at a CL news conference that fan favorite and England hope, Wayne Rooney, wanted out of the club. What made things even more disturbing about it was the alleged motives behind his wanting to leave. The club lacked ambition. The club could no longer attract top talent. The club was on the decline. As hard as it was to accept, Wayne merely seemed to be putting into words what so many of us were already feeling after the first 8 games.
In a dramatic turn of events, Rooney signed a contract extension a few days later, but not before burning a couple of bridges in the hearts of United fans. Even then, we still acknowledged that this current squad of players were just not up to the task of really posing a threat on the title, let alone Europe.
7 months later and here we are on the brink of title # 19 as well as a potential double.
What a crazy sport this is. (And what a genius that Sir Alex is).
