Weak midfield gets even weaker
By: Shaun | February 22nd, 2011
Almost as if to further prove my point here, our already thin (in terms of quantity and quality) midfield takes another hit with news that Ando will be sidelined for 2 months.
A knee/cartilage injury sustained in the Crawley game on Saturday has left SAF in a tough spot heading into the final few months of the season. With the games coming every couple of days now, this would have been the perfect opportunity for Ando to really prove himself to the manager and build on the impressive displays he put forth earlier in the season.
Unfortunately, you can’t negotiate with the injury bug and our midfield depth is now considerably weaker for at least 2 months. With Scholes unable to play every 3 days, the 2 spots in the middle will probably be a constant rotation of Fletch, Scholes, Carrick and Gibson. At this point, Carrick isn’t exactly inspiring confidence or changing games, but he’s the lesser of the two evils when compared with Gibson.
As it is, we won’t see Park till early March and Ando at the end of April. We should pray for Valencia’s swift return so as to allow Nani to move to the left and in the process, free up Giggs to occupy one of our central midfield spots.
God forbid another one of our midfielders sustain an injury.
God forbid we find ourselves in a position where our only available central midfield options are Gibson and Carrick…
