United v. West Brom Preview

I can’t decide how I feel about the current rate of United fixtures. On the one hand, I love that we apparently have a game every 43 seconds, but on the other, half our squad may be dead by April. It’s a tricky situation, and one that’s not likely to be made any easier by the fact that we remain alive in four separate competitions (EPL, Champions League, Carling Cup, and the FA Cup). It’s definitely annoying to see our injury sheet and note more names there than on the fit-for-duty list. However, I would much prefer to have too many matches than not enough.

Remember him? Owen Hargreaves (last healthy in the spring of 1976) is just as concerned about United’s list of walking wounded as you are…
That said our roster for tonight is noticeably bare. Most likely, United will be without the services of roughly 367 first teamers (including Evra, Brown, Ferdinand, Evans, Rafael, Park, Nani, Anderson, Hargo, Rooney, and possibly Welbeck AND Fabio). So, there’s a distinct possibility that tonight’s starting XI will have a bit of a makeshift look to it.
The good news? So too will West Brom’s. The Baggies have an injury list ten names long, including four of their centre-backs (Abdoulaye Meite, Jonas Olsson, Leon Barnett, and Neil Clement) and captain Jonathan Greening. Nevertheless, West Brom manager Tony Mowbray remains fairly optimistic about his side’s chances tonight.
“We have won a few games and drawn a few. We go into the game hoping to give Manchester United an uncomfortable night. United haven’t been as free-flowing and there have been a few games recently where it has been 1-0 or 2-1. If we can make it a tight game for them and a nervous game for them, the longer it goes, you never know in football.”
I wonder what the Baggies game plan could possibly be. Free-flowing attack? Lots of possession? Creating exciting chances? Nope. They’re going to sit ten men behind the ball and hoof it up for counterattacks. Awesome.
Predicted Starting XI: VDS, Fletcher, Vidic, Neville, O’Shea, Slave, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Berba, Tevez. Bench: PIG, Chester, Eckersley, Possebon, Gibson, Tosic, Macheda (seriously… that’s all we’ve got).
Taylor’s Prediction: Everything about this match should make me nervous. This will be our seventh match in 20 days. We’re without six potential defensive starters. Wayne Rooney is hurt. Slave has (I believe) a stomach bug. We’re playing away to a team that will be looking for a draw. It’s going to be VERY cold and wet. Darron Gibson could figure at some point. And yet, I am expecting United to thump their opposition tonight. One quick goal, and it could easily be a 3 or 4 nil victory. My guess is that Berba gets one in (at the very least). My hope is that we see A LOT of Zoran Tosic tonight… and that the Serb makes an immediate impact with a goal or eight. Regardless, a full three points would be a welcome result. Come on you Reds!

Oh yeah… random bit o’ news… we’ve drawn either Derby or Nottingham Forrest in the next round of the FA Cup… so at least we’ve gotten away from exclusively drawing Premiership opponents at every opportunity!

Anybody have thoughts on who should start? Scoreline predictions? How many times will Gibson cross the ball directly into a WBA defender? 30?

In my opinion Taylor the scheduling is horrible. The argument that it rewards the “best squad” is lacking and you’re assured that the clubs cannot field their best sides.
Looking forward to seeing Zoran Tošić feature. He’s a great young player that will serve Man Utd well.

I agree that the fixtures aren’t doing us any favors… all I’m saying is that, right now, I’m happy that we’re alive in all major competitions with a world class squad still available… whether or not that will be the case come May is an entirely different story… we could easily pull a Rangers from last year and drop some serious results…

As depleted as we are, it’s important to take a 2nd look at that projected front 6 — Ronaldo, Giggs, Carrick, Scholes, Berbatov, Tevez. How many clubs in the world wouldn’t trade their top 6 for that in a heartbeat? Barca and who else? Obviously we’d love to be at full-strength — and we all know we’re not the same team without Wayne.
But that front 6 HAS to be good enough to score a couple against most teams in the league, let alone WBA (all due respect and all that).
I’m more worried about the makeshift back 4, but it’s nothing if not experienced. If WBA, as expected, play 10 men behind the ball, we’ll need Sheasey and Gaz to bomb down the wings at least somewhat effectively.
Anyone else fancy going 3 clear at the top?

Taylor, I don’t see any problems ahead for your club and by seasons end you’ll be filling the trophy case again. You’ve got the best management group and scouting system in the Premier League by far and continuing to reinforce this globally.

Gibson should be groomed as a defensive midfielder. Maybe he’s like Darren Flethcer 2.0 where he becomes a quality midfielder at almost 25. That said, there’s really no reason we shouldn’t beat WBA with our midfield intact. Ronaldo should get at least one today.

Nobobomo – I agree… he doesn’t fit the style of winger we currently employ… a central defensive midfield position seems perfect… I think he’s certainly got talent, but not on the wing…

If CR7 is to regain any of his sizzling form from last year, this would be a great game to do it. By bagging a few he could really take the pressure off Berbatov and Tevez.
Man, I really miss Hargreaves.

I want Tevez to start scoring more often, for all the work he does (eg against spurs) he is rarely on the scoresheet.
As for Hargreaves…I thought he was a myth…

Wes, Rio and Park all make the squad today, with Rio and Park straight into the starting 11. Looking up already.

I’m gonna give Obama completely undeserved credit for this unexpected lineup… that’s a boost I didn’t expect…
Edwin van der Sar, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Slave, Ji-Sung Park, Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov
Subs: Paul Scholes, Richard Eckersley, Zoran Tosic, Failbot, Wes Brown, Darron Gibson, Darren Fletcher
Wow… forecast is much better than anticipated…

Kickoff has been delayed until 3:15 EST (traffic problems?)

Once again, I am horrendously wrong… WBA pushing forward… definitely not afraid to go at the United defense (especially O’Shea, who was just megged on the touchline)

YES! 1-0 United, and the Carrick-Berba connection continues… lovely interplay and another class finish from Berba… glad I joined the bandwagon early on…

1 goal. 2 missed chances for easy goals. 1 missed penalty call. Should be 4-0 right now. Dammit!

Wow. Hectic few minutes here. A red card for Paul Robinson, and then a shite catch from Carson leads to a Tevez goal. 2-0 for United and suddenly my blowout prediction looks accurate.

4-0. Two more (Vidic and Slave). We’re rolling now!

TOSIC!!! Berba off, Zoran on.

this was an obvious trouncing…so how’d tosic look?

He looked pretty good. One moment of brilliance that Slave couldn’t quite get to. He’s definitely going to be more of a factor than I had anticipated.
