United v Boca – Random Updates

By: Taylor Rockwell | July 29th, 2009

90+ – AND THAT’S THE FINAL WHISTLE! Anderson with the first goal, and Valencia nets the winner. United struggled at times in the second half, but a win is a win… and Boca certainly aren’t pushovers. So well done to United! See you all tomorrow!

89′ – Announcers say (for roughly the 3000th time) that it looks as though United will be in the Final… reverse jinx much boys?

76′ – Another great save by Polish Failbot… he’s starting to make me wonder if this nickname is apt…

68′ – And Valencia is off… to thunderous applause… and I sigh amorously…

64′ – Fergie heard me, and United are bring on their second wave of players. Meanwhile, my man-crush on Valencia is out of control…

61′ – United have definitely settled, and Boca are getting a lot more of the play. The Red Devils better hold on… I want to crush Munich/AC in the final…

55′ – GOAL! Boca pull one back. Federico Insua slots it home. He was totally unmarked on the back post. Way to ball watch guys! Way to ball watch.

53′ – Proving he is more machine than man, Failbot responds with a very nice save. Do you think every time he plays well, Ben Foster gets angry? And vice-versa? I would guess yes.

52′ – Rio just tried to get Polish Failbot murdered with a very poor backpass. Very clever, Rio. Very clever.

Did Boca try to flee at halftime like the POWs in the movie “Victory”? Is Stallone their goalkeeper? WHy did they take an hour to come back out for the second half?

While United await the second half, the German speakers are blaring “Billy Jean” by Michael Jackson.

I have to admit, there was a moment when Valencia sprinted back, laid out, and tackled the player with the ball. And I was totally shocked, cause I forgot that outside players played defense.

Okay… that goal was the universe’s way of saying “you’ll be fine without Slave”.

I mean really? What were the odds that United would get goals from Anderson AND Valencia. It’s got to be a good sign that both Owen and Valencia managed to net in their debut, right? I guess that’s a bit of a tradition. Will they beat Rooney’s hat trick against Fenerbahce? Probably not.

45′ – So, Valencia can score goals… but his corners leave something to be desired… Half time now…

42 – VALENCIA!!! THE DEBUT GOAL!!! He beats two and has a crack… which should have been saved, but wasn’t! Suck on that Slave!

42′ – Valencia plays a lovely ball in, but Rooney can’t convert. Valencia looking sharpish so far…

42′ – While Riquelme fires over, the camera cuts to Ronaldhino (who amazingly isn’t eating a burger)

40′ – And we’re back…

And now my feed just switched to a German game… Confused…

35′ – Wes Brown is already down injured… Rio warming up… Unbelievable…

33′ – Just to catch up, Anderson gets his first goal with a beautiful free kick from about 20 yards out… He celebrated to the level that you would expect. Fergie celebrated by wearing ankle socks…

14′ – Pretty physical match thus far. It merits mentioning that John O’Shea is currently wearing the captain’s arm band. How likely was that a year ago today? Wes Brown and Fabio are also in the starting lineup… I wonder if Boca are afraid to be playing against ghosts…

I’ll be randomly posting thoughts at random points throughout the match. Feel free to post your own thoughts/comments below. I’m just a wee bit too lazy to try to live blog today.
