United Ready to Say Hello to Eto’o?

By: Nick | June 18th, 2008

As we’ll be linked with every player under the sun for the next few weeks, every name that pops up should (of course) be taken with a rather large grain of salt, so make what you will of speculation that Samuel Eto’o could be wearing a red shirt soon.

Why we need an injury-prone player, considered surplus to requirements at Barcelona is beyond me.

Eto’o isn’t really injury-prone… He’s only missed one period in the last eight years, and that was one long knee injury that spanned from the middle of the 2006/07 season to the beginning of the 2007/08 season.

I’d not be dissapointed if he joined the Red Devils. He’s 27, he’s got at least three more years at the top of his form, he’s one of the best strikers in the game, and he’s a winner. It depends a lot on how Fergie wants United to play next season, but he could be a massive swoop to help our strike force, since he just seems to score non-stop.

Although I must admit that I’m still hooked on Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. I rate him above Benzema, but then they’re not exactly the same position, Huntelaar being more an out-and-out striker. But it would be harsh to bring in Huntelaar and ask him to be an immediate starter… He probably needs a year or two to be nurtured like Nani, Ronaldo or Anderson.

Didn’t he miss big chunks of the last two season’s with knee injuries?

    We don’t need another Saha.

I dont think he is as injury prone as our man Louis..it just happened last two years….I have been following him for a long time…anyways he is one of the best strikers in world football and will be an extraordinary catch IF his ego can be contained….something that Sir Alex can surely do…but I also would prefer KJH…we prefer youth!
what do you guys think of the new away kit…it looks uninspiring to me ..really weak effort by Nike….practically no change from last year kit…even more bland colors! :(

if sam does come what does that do to tevez? surely all 4 (cr, wayne, tevez, and sam?) wouldn’t play @ the same time. it’s just weird that we’re being linked w/ all these strikers. i know the target man is a need but is it immediate? where does that leave nani as an attacking option if there’s ANOTHER guy in the fold. i know depth blah blah and all but really? how about right back for god’s sake?

We need someone to replace Saha, matt. And even if you consider CRon to be a striker, he’s not going to provide 30+ goals each season… Especially not if you want him to improve on the wing, something I think would be great for us. Tevez and Rooney are a very good pair of attackers, but they lack a bit of cutting edge. This season, Ronaldo provided, but it was intended to be Saha’s role. With Eto’o and/or Huntelaar, we’d have a lot more options. We could play Eto’o/Huntelaar in front of both Rooney and Tevez, with a midfield line of Scholes/Carrick, Hargreaves/Anderson and Ronaldo/Nani. Or we could rest players like Rooney and Tevez without being forced to play Ronaldo up front and have a Giggs-Nani winger pair, but have a real lone striker and Nani-Ronaldo to provide…

I’d like to see us get stronger links with Ramos (especially if Ronaldo ends up leaving for the spanish gits) because he’s one of the best right-backs out there. But Brown is a decent right-back, even if he’s often a bit boring and seems to be playing a bit close to his limit, and we’ve got Simpson who put in good games when he was called upon, although he’s probably not yet to fill Gary’s boots.

as it is, nani is still finding his synergy wt teammates rooney & tevez…that’s gonna take a while unless he for once, decides that ’selfishness’ isnt d way 2 go…if eto’o comes on board…matt’s right, how wld the front line-up be? not a big fan…sorry eto’o!

shaz- i get that but we’re gonna pay what 20-30 mil for a replacement to a bench player? i like eto’o even though he’s not really a target…love his pace etc. if it’s going to be anyone i wish it would be kjh or someone of that ilk so we could focus on more defensive depth. i dont see why ronaldo wont get near 30 again next year if he’s with us. really, what’s going to stop him?
