United on the Defensive Regarding Saudi Arabia Trip
By: Nick | January 21st, 2008As is customary with United these days, every single decision the club makes is debated ad nauseum.
This time, there are questions over the air-mile clocking trip to Saudi Arabia — with it falling during a relatively busy part of the season.
Questions of financial motivations aside, I personally can’t see the harm in escaping the cold British winter for a few days for a kick-about in Riyadh.
If Sir Alex sees it as a potential bonding exercise, then who are we to disagree?

I really don’t understand what the fuss is all about. I mean I just saw several big named clubs from the Serie A go to warm weather countries to play friendlies. why are they making such a fuss regarding ManUtd?? it’s BS I say. let them go and have a game. it at least gives the fans in that country a chance to watch the team play. and it boasts United’s international appeal, and that brings in more cash due to the fact that those people will be buying more ManUtd gear. so I see it as a win win.

Jina, the main difference is that the Serie A clubs have a break over the winter/Christmas period. So clubs go to warmer climes for a few weeks to keep fitness up, and they take advantage to get a few friendlies under their belt. What Man U did was a 3/4-day tour to Saudi Arabia, between two domestic fixtures, pretty much just to play a friendly… So there’s risk of fatigue when they get back to play their next game. That’s all.
