Transfers Are to Manchester United What Heroin is to an Addict
By: Taylor Rockwell | July 17th, 2009
Much like the heroin addict who swears this is his last hit, Manchester United (and Sir Alex Ferguson) need just one more hit to get them through their Asia tour. As previously discussed, Fergie made it quite clear that United were done in the transfer window (leading some incredibly astute individuals to wonder whether or not this was smoke and mirrors). Today, Manchester United confirmed that the club had captured Senegal Under-21 striker Mame Biram Diouf from Norwegian club Molde. This signing is important on two different fronts.
Number 1: It definitely appears that the speculation regarding Fergie’s decision to abandon any further transfers was more so rooted in frustration than an actual set policy. As a result of Slave and Kaka, nearly every player in the world is now apparently worth 15 times what they were three months ago. Take, for example, the case of Douglas Costa. The ramifications of his signing aside, the youngster (or “New Ronaldhino” if you prefer) has featured in only a total of 13 games for the Brazilian side. Of those appearances, eight were as a substitution. His goal tally? Zero. And yet Gremio, currently residing in eighth place in the Brasileirao, are demanding upwards of £25 million for the youngster.
So it doesn’t really surprise me that Fergie intended to close up shop, nor does it surprise me that he’s also occupying the role of shopaholic today. “We weren’t intending on signing anyone else after last week – we feel we have a full squad – but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids, so we had to decide whether we acted or didn’t act. We decided to act and he’ll be the last person we sign.” Translation: We’ve tracked him for two years, realized he would be cheap now, realized that if other clubs got involved the price would skyrocket, and therefore pulled the trigger quickly. Whether or not this is actually our final signing remains to be seen.
Number 2: I don’t know what the cost of this deal was, but I’m willing to say this: move over Manucho, there’s a new man-crush in town. According to Soccernet, “The 21-year-old forward joined Molde in January 2007 and has scored 23 goals in just over 50 league appearances for the Norwegian club.” Sadly, he won’t be heading to Old Trafford any time soon. “He was signed yesterday and he needs a work permit. He’ll stay on loan where he is and we’ll look to bring him in January,” said United chief executive David Gill.
Regardless, I’m always excited when we bring in a new striker even if the words “Senegalese striker” and “Norwegian League” don’t exactly instill a lot of confidence. Just remember that the last player to play for both Molde and Manchester United was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Just saying… Anyway, here are some YouTube clips that will hopefully sustain you until January…
That’s right Nani… he stole your celebration… I would advise you to watch your back…
Do you like overly dramatic, semi-blurry videos? You do? Good?
As a commenter already pointed out, he apparently loves to score against teams in Red. That bodes well for us.

He looks very good for his age. Great aerial ability and can finish too. Hopefully he’ll be a good signing for us.
And you spelt heroin wrong. Your spelling is the feminine version of hero.

United have never really had anyone in the Adebayor-type role. A tall, lanky center forward who is good in the air.
As long as the price is right, then I think this is another low risk / high reward signing.
Dude’s got a sweet name too.

Appreciated Martin… although it was really just a calculated decision to keep people from checking my arms for tracks…

our arsenal style transfer policy is exciting and infuriating. i mean we’re officially eating the 2 spanish teams friggin dust when the barca/zlatan deal goes through right? seems that way to me

And Colin, regarding you Adebayor comments, that’s why I was so excited about Manucho. Unfortunately, I heard referred to as “the worst player in the Premier League” multiple times…
Additionally, it should be noted that Diuof is only 6′1, so not exactly that tall by modern standards… regardless, I’m looking forward to January and his inevitable substitution in the 89th minute against Pompey…

Matt, I think it depends on where the policy goes… cause United have made a habit of developing young players for long term roles… Slave was something different, and if we continue in that vein then I’ll be more than a little upset…
I’m going to be posting a rather large post about all of this (hopefully) later today… check back if you’re trying to kill some time this afternoon…

oh i’m completely down with killing time reading transfer rumors and all that sort of stuff. here’s a couple questions i have for you by the way:
is darron gibson and not anderson the actual scholes replacement?
does nani get first crack on the left wing this year?
since the hargreaves thing is unsorted and won’t ever be, do you think that anyone at old trafford thinks that they can get by on the highest level with carrick or fletcher there?

and as soon as i click on the guardian website it’s got fergie saying that hargo is gonna be back in september?
OH DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN

I think Hargo will be back in September the same way Neville has been TOTALLY fit for the past two seasons…
Additionally, I knew Obertan was injured when we signed him, but was it made clear that it meant he would be out for the first three months of the season? What the hell is in the water at Carrington?

Hargo must be in good shape if Fergie hasn’t addressed CM, at least that is what I take out of this summer so far. Most likely, I’m just being naive.
Regarding Ibrahimovic going to Barca, I actually like it. I fancy their squad over Real’s and it will be great to see Ronaldo cry like a baby while he’s getting douched by Puyol.
Barcelona spanked us in the final, but for some reason, I really don’t mind them.
Is it bad that I have a like two other teams I root for (except when they are playing United)?

Although sports bigamy is generally frowned upon, I’m also a Galatasaray supporter, so I won’t hold it against you…
As far as Manucho… well… we’d been having problems for a while. He spent most of his time away in the east. We didn’t really speak the same language. You know, the usual signs that a man-crush isn’t going to work out. And, like I said, I’ve moved on to Diouf now…

My apologies, been out partying hard so these are all the points my pounding head can remember:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA6qjZcA_FoBad points:
1. The midfield really needs a Hargreaves stat. Anderson tried and sprayed several great passes but his shooting…I will say no more. And Paul Scholes…sigh.
2. Darren Gibson looked bright in patches, but is way too ’soft’ vs a Malaysian team ranked 106th in the world or something.
3. The defense (except for Rio, who was excellent)was really shaky without the Terminator. Evans was flaky at times, which is worrying since he’s supposed to be miles better than Pique.
4. Ben Foster needs to get over his duh moments. And soon because VDS looked damn old.
5. Nani has the head down, not passing to team mates selfish thing going on. I saw Anderson shouting at him to pass several times.Good points:
1. The team played okay considering jet lag, the heat, humidity etc.
2 The young ones gladden the heart: Tosic and Macheda were good in patches.
3. Nani worked really hard, showed good pace.
4. Despite the hype, Michael Owen really did show glimmers of his old self.
5. Ryan Giggs was a really2 good sub.My photos were crap, tryin to get better ones to post here.

I forgot. Wes Brown is alive and well people! He played steady to boot. No sign of Bionic Hargreaves though.

Make sure he never starts a Home game then.
