Transfer talk
By: Ian | July 28th, 2012
Nearly a month into the transfer market, and things have been fairly quiet in England. Chelsea have spent big, but maybe it just doesn’t seem so mad as Man City have been so inactive. Perhaps PSG now have all the money. But anyway, Utd, let’s do a quick summary of ins and outs thus far:
Ins: Kagawa, Powell
Outs: Owen, Kuszczak, Park
Kagawa looks good value for money, or at least as good as one can get nowadays. His goal-scoring was very good in Germany last year, and I really hope he continues that here, as I always think we don’t score enough goals from midfield. Powell played an important role for Crewe, but hopefully he’ll learn quickly. His Vauxhall Corsa in the Carrington car park certainly stood out a bit, now begins the attempt to transfer such an ability to the pitch.
With regards to the leavers, I don’t have any particularly strong feelings. Michael Owen leaving was inevitable with his injury record. Even with his reputation, scoring in October and returning to carry on in March or whatever isn’t the definition of consistency. And as he didn’t play enough, he still managed to injure himself in training. Kuszczak’s loss is only a blow in terms of United Scrabble matches. Brighton have his services now. Park was a loyal servant, an excellent squad player, never gave up (with his three lungs, hard not to) and will be missed. But his leaving feels more like a natural progression at his age, rather than a shock exit. I believe a fee of £2m was received from QPR, possibly rising to £5m.
We now enter the realm of speculation. Many names have been suggested, but Sir Alex stated any deals were trying to be conducted in relative quiet. This is virtually impossible at times, and he has since confirmed interest in Van Persie and Lucas Moura of Brazil. Whether these guys turn up remains to be seen, but I think another first team midfielder might well be a good investment, given the age of Giggs and Scholes (though they could be around for ages yet with the way they play).
So, thoughts everybody? Who’s arriving? Who’s father’s cousin’s brother’s cat works at Manchester airport and has seen Luka Modric at arrivals? Does anyone know any admin staff who’ve heard of a cab being called for a Mr D.Berbatov? Thoughts, suggestions, anything interesting to be mentioned, below please :)
