The Title Winning Season in Review: Fulham (H) August 20th

By: Nick | May 22nd, 2007

A sunny day in August saw United kick off with a handsome 5-1 thrashing of Fulham, which was to become a microcosm of both clubs’ seasons. Fears that Ruud van Nistelrooy’s sale might hamper United’s scoring threat were immediately put to bed as goals from Saha, Ronaldo and a Rooney brace contributed to five of the eighty three League goals the Reds would notch to secure the title.

The Guardian noted in its match report:

“United’s first-touch, pass-and-move football was mesmerising at times and they will enjoy the view from the top of the Premiership, even if the league is only one game old. It is time for their supporters to stop worrying about the relationship between Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo…”

How right they were.

Optimism would immediately rise after the game. Yet few would expect the glory to come.
