The Great Crest Debate Of 2009 – Update
By: Wayne Farry | February 26th, 2009
Perhaps the title of this post is a bit too grand for this post given that it’s no more than an update but hey, who cares? So the EPL lawyers (possibly, but probably not the nasty and peculiarly fuzzy looking ones pictured) weren’t too happy with The Offside’s use of EPL crests as a way to navigate through these pages. We needed to contact each club individually about being allowed to use the crest. In our case, that meant sending an email to Old Trafford.
As Taylor stated yesterday in this post, we both contacted Man Utd with regards to using the crest for this page. Today, I got a reply from the Enquiries Dept. at Old Trafford that went like this;
Dear Wayne
Thank you for your email, your request has already been forwarded to our Trademarks Department who will be in touch in due course.
Kind Regards

So at least things are going in the right direction. The fact that they didn’t immediately dismiss it means, to me at least, that there’s a chance we could be getting somewhere.
That’s all we have on it for now, but we’ll update you as soon as we get a reply from Trademarks Department, fingers crossed.
*Obviously, name was changed.

Wayne — Arsenal gave me the same spiel…
“we have passed it onto the marketing department.”
No word as of yet.

Yeah, I think it’s the automated response, so to speak. Good luck with with your getting permission trav, it’d be nice if some clubs let us display their crests.

I contemplated letting United know that Tuesday’s scoreless draw was the direct result of them not immediately oking our request… then I realized that the people that would make that kind of decision probably wouldn’t find that type of joke humorous…

Yeah Taylor, I gotta agree. I was thinking it was a a ‘karma’ thing too. But yeah, I doubt many of the United Trademarks Dept. employees moonlight as stand-up comedians.

I love that Man Utd have an entire department devoted to trademarks. Not sure whether to be impressed or terrified.

United is your friend Daryl… do not be afraid… albeit a massive, faceless corporation-esque friend that could buy and sell you at the drop of a hat… and really, isn’t that what friendship is?
