Squeeking By Lyon — Your Reaction? (Open Comment Thread)

By: Nick | March 4th, 2008

Let’s get some opinion about last night’s match.

I’ll go first — Strange team choice, fairly uninspiring performance, boring match overall and we’ll have to play a lot better to win the competition.

But we’re safely through to the next round.

though we won but i think it’s high time fergie do something about rooney’s lack of proficiency in front of goal.i’ve counted over twenty chances that rooney would have buried in the past in recent matches.it could be a psychological problem but fergie should see to it.anderson was also in no man’s land all through yesterday.we need to do better next time.

I think all the personel deserved a place but the midfield did seem a bit crowded. I would have prefered to see Hargreaves and Anderson, with two up front supported by Ronaldo and Nani.

It seemed as though as soon as the ball went up to any of the forward three they were instantly doubled up on. Runs were being missed and passes were being blocked.

WHY DOES ROONEY ALWAYS TRY TO BLOODY LOB THE KEEPER?!!!!

One chance he had near the end, he tried to lob him when he was about a metre away. It turned out to be about as effective as possible. If what he was trying to do was flick the ball up nicely into the keeper’s arms.

What’s happened to the days when he used to drill it hard and low, towards the back post?

Again near the end, ball at his feet in the area, tries a backheel.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE JUST THUMP THE BLOODY BALL!

He’s not the only one guilty either. Anderson’s shot which was blocked before the goal was pathetic – you can’t place a ball with your left from that angle. The whole squad (with the exception of Ronaldo) needs to practice low, hard shots into the corner. We’re turning into an Arsenal of a couple of years back, needing to pass the ball into the net. I don’t like it.

I actually thought out of the midfield 3 that Fletcher was by far and away the best. Before the game I wanted a Hargreaves/Anderson CM, but in retrospect wish we’d have played Hargreaves/Scholes. A couple of times we could have used Scholes’ calming influence to break up the few spells of possession the French had.

Overall solid enough though – United tend to raise their game to the occassion, and at the end of the day Lyon never created anywhere near a big enough occassion.

Having said that though – best player on the pitch was without a doubt Benzema. We need to get him to OT asap.

The game was boring and uninspired through out, but who cares as long as we are winning and we all know that this is not the united we know. plus we contained them well enough so all in all we did what needed to be done.

the best player on the pitch was without any doubt Benzema, the lads were not able to get the ball out of him whenever he had it. his body balance, ball control and composure r just amazing.. we should get him and ditch injury prone Saha in the deal.

I have no idea why Rooney keeps trying to lob the goalies all this season long. He’s way over doing it and is misusing it most of the times. what happened to the days when he used to smash the ball against the net.. i think he managed to control and lower his temper but his shots power were lowered too.
Fletch played his heart out and was uniteds best player on the pitch.

the noticable thing though was the missed passes, on couple of the 3 on 2 situations which we had. nani ronaldo tevez all played the ball into the defenders legs while all the needed was to square the ball to the left alone player. it was killing me. it happened atleast 3 times.
all in all we did play efficiently enough to qualify.

thought we did well enough, but a performance like that in the quarterfinals will see us demolished by any half competent side. our marking at the back was good, nice to see vida healthy again. brown continues to impress at right back i hope he takes his new contract. our midfield was congested and anderson wasn’t his usual bright and busy self. fletcher was an enormous influence yet again and carrick had some good balls. the wing play from nani and ronaldo was decent in the first half, less than perfect in the second; other than his goal ronaldo had a bit of a poor game, nothing seemed to be coming off for him.

rooney does need to work on his finishing it seems. we all know he has the tools to finish those chances; we’ve seen him do it. i think it comes down to confidence, and picking the right tool for the job. you cant lob the keeper from a metre, and you cant backheel when the defender is behind you.

all in all, not a great performance, but a job done.

It’s a shame that the biggest casualties of the ‘cautious’ football Fergie plays in Europe are our attacking players; Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez etc.

Rooney gets no support. He can’t play that centre-forward role. You sometimes see Ronaldo going up top because at least he has the height.

If we had a big man there’d be no need to start 3 midfielders and Rooney could go back into his best position – off the main striker. If he drops deep when the other team have the ball that would form a 5 in midfield, and we’d still have our 442 shape going forward.

It was a professional 1-nil win and Fergie will be delighted with it. But it’s the same old same old in Europe once again.

Antimanu, is that site yours? If it is, you definitely need to get a life. If not… well, you definitely need to get a life as well.

About the game… I think Ronaldo did quite well, at least he got the goal. Fletcher was one of our best players IMO. Vidic was brilliant too. Rooney didn’t do much, unfortunately. However since we won, it’s all good :)
