So Now Inter Want Mr. Ballon D’Or?

By: Wayne Farry | December 3rd, 2008

First off, I’d like to apologise for my inactivity in recent weeks. College is tough when you’re learning how to be a journalist but I’ve got assignments done, and I’m back on track.

So, when we found out that Real Madrid’s interest was well and truly over and done with we were all pretty happy, eh? No need to worry about Ronaldo leaving anymore. It was nice.

But now the gossip mongers are back and are claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo has another suitor, in the form of Serie A champions and perennial winger buyer, Inter Milan. According to droves of websites on this interweb, Ronaldo is very keen on teaming up with his compatriot and former Chelsea manager José Mourinho at the Nerazurri.

What’s worrying is that most of the comments appear to have come from Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes. He has supposedly stated to the Inter hierarchy that Ronaldo still wants to leave Man Utd and would love to move to Inter. Mendes was the agent that helped Ricardo Quaresma’s deal to Inter go through and thus he has a connection and probably trust with Inter. Yes, I mentioned the words ‘trust’ and ‘agent’ in the same sentence.

If the deal is going to happen, it would be bankrolled by Pirelli, Inter’s main sponsors who also paid for the deal to bring the original Ronaldo to Inter from Barca in 1997.

One stumbling block is that Man Utd have stated in the recent past that they categorically have no intention of selling Ronaldo in the near future. The fact that Inter, and not Real Madrid want him is hardly going to change Sir Alex’s mind…

So, basically I really can’t see this one happening. But it’s a fairly interesting story regardless.

Welcome back Wayne… I like the idea of Inter signing Slave, and then Jose immediately leaving to take Fergie’s job at United…

Wow, you know this is actually a pleasent suprise. Ronaldo in the Serie A, instead of La Liga could be interesting.

With Real pick up Huntelaar, I would love United to sell of CRonaldo and pick up Benzema and also keep Tevez. I’m United till I die, but this year CRonaldo has been giving the #7 a bad rep, and that is one haloed # at United…

I gave it a rest yesterday because I felt like he earned it, but the reader poll validated my nickname. So here we are… what I am curious about his what impact Slave leaving will have on the squad. More specifically, were Nani and Anderson brought in to be his Portuguese-speaking friends or does Fergie actually rate them? Anderson maybe, but Nani looks to have fallen off the radar a bit. So what happens if/when 7 leaves? Does the chemistry go to shit or does it improve?

Ha, cheers Rob. It was a toss-up between that, Ronaldo Mark 1 and Ronaldo 1st. I think I made the right choice..

i vote to let inter have him. i think immediately the players might be weirded out but i think it’d benefit the squad in the long run because they wouldn’t feel in the shadow of slave. not to mention the nice check utd would pick up for him.

ha. He’d be shite in Serie A against the stronger teams. They’d man mark him and man handle him until he cried.
Can I cite AC Milan vs Utd in the CL in 2005? Gattuso stuck closer to Ronaldo than his hair gel and rendered him useless.

I can see where you’re coming from mele419 but Ronaldo circa 2005 is almost incomparable to Ronaldo from last season and this season in my opinion.

What about the 06/07 CL ? Ronaldo was useless against Milan again. So I might have to agree with Mele that he would be shite… but only at first. Ronaldo is still very young, and has lots of growing to do. We lose sight of the fact that he’s 23. Playing in the Serie A would (IMO) elevate his technical game. Maybe it’s just what he needs.

Yeah, he was poor against Milan in 06/07 too. But in the match against Roma (7-1) he had a cracker. And in the match last season at the Stadio Olimpico he also had a great game, capping it off with a great goal.

Regardless, you can’t predict how someone will do in a league based on a few games against teams from that league.

Yes, Ronaldo was really bad against Roma in 2006/07 and 2007/08. Milan is obviously an average Italian side, though, so it’s right to consider how he’d perform solely on how he did against Milan. Just like how he’d be bad in la Liga because he wasn’t brilliant against Barcelona.

Ok first of Sir Alex will never sell Ronaldo before his contract expires, i believe Ronaldo will get better and has had poor form because of the ankle injury… Not to boast to much about the EPL but it is one of if not THE best football league in the world… I personally think Ronaldo is a great player and will not leave united.. as his agents have also said they are about to start talks with United to renew his contract
