Rooney Escapes Further Ban, Phew!
By: Wayne Farry | March 23rd, 2009
Somehow, someway, someone up there is smiling down on us for the first time in about two weeks.
Wayne Rooney, despite his Mascherano-esque behaviour after being sent off for two yellow cards against Fulham, has escaped any further ban other than the compulsory one-match ban for two yellow cards from the FA.
Rooney was given his second yellow card by Phil Dowd for throwing the ball ‘away’ in the direction of the free-kick that was about to be taken. Some say he deserved to be sent off, some say it was harsh but it’s irrelevant.
Honestly I’m really surprised that he’s evaded extra punishment. His anger afterwards, however warranted, was more exuberant than is usually accepted by any Premier League ref.
So, as it is he’ll only miss the upcoming home match against Villa. And how glad are we that he won’t miss anymore matches, he was the only player who showed any heart against Fulham and we’ll need his attitude (perhaps without the outbursts) during the run-in.

Are you really surprised that he won’t be punished? if it was up to the FA, he would have gotten a pat on the back instead of a card

Rooney seems to be the only United player with any sense of urgency .. complacency seems to be a big problem the last few matches ..

Yeah, he seems like the only one with any spirit too! It’s so obvious that he just wants to win all the time, at all costs.
Not like that dickface Ronaldo.

he should’ve been banned for at least more than one game.. this is shameful from the FA..

Yeah, regardless of whether or not you think that it was deserved of a red card The FA have to be consistent. If you’re going to ban Masch for what he did last season, you HAVE to ban Roo for this.

Masch was more direct in the ref’s face, whilst Rooney threw the ball in Evan’s direction (with ref in the line of fire). Slight difference maybe?
Oh who can figure out the FA anymore.
More importantly without Rooney vs Villa, who will bring the fire? I say put Wellbeck in, as well as Fabio (Evra aint well it seems). Please God make the midfield wake up! Anderson and carrick I’m pointing at yous.

miele; I don’t mean that the Roo incident was exactly like Masch’s behaviour but they were similar, Rooney showed what you’d expect The FA to consider as disrespect to the ref.
But alas, as you say, who can figure out The FA?

Don’t you think if Ferguson wanted to put Fabio he would’ve done it in the last game.. for some reason Ferguson never trusts the young for the title run-in.. maybe he just does not want to faze them .. I don’t know…

You’re right Mat, but not many managers put their young players out during the title run-in.
Rafa has only played Insua, N’Gog and El Zhar sporadically throughout the season and even less so lately.
Although for Fergie there might not be any other choice than to play Welbeck against Villa. I have no problem with that though, Welbeck’s gonna be star.

Welbeck was *outstanding* in the reserve game against Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, clearly a class above the rest of the players on the pitch. Granted, it’s a reserves game, but he was a man.
And I have to say I am a little disappointed in the FA’s decision…for me the ban on Masch was completley justified, and I think Rooney was similarly out of control and disrespectful.
I think Insua would feature in Liverpool’s side right now, moreso than the other two you mention, but Aurelio has been a class above in the last month, haven’t seen form like this from him since he arrived. My two cents anyway.

I agree with you an all accounts. Insua would get playing but isn’t. But that, as you said is because Aurelio is playing like a man possessed.
Seriously, I think he’s possessed by the devil. He’s not at his usual ’shit level’.

The lack of adequate cover United has for the left back position is coming back to haunt them big time.. right back has three to four players that can play there and have played this season – Rafael, O’Shea, Neville (shit), Brown.. if you look at the left back spot United have only two- Evra and Fabio.. and among them Fabio has not played at all this season.. and the time of play is catching up with Evra big time.. and his forays down the wing to help Ronaldo in attack makes it even worse..
Just watched the highlights of the Fulham game and the way Evra jogged back after committing a mistake that started the move was just astonishing.. and knowing that there was someone free on the back post and front Ferdinand was stuck in no-man’s land…Posted from

vital piece of news with rooney escaping a ban…he is the only player with a bit of heart when things are down. I mean to be fair, how can a player like him keep his cool when you have ronaldo’s childish behaviour and berbatov’s lazy attitude as your strike force in any match… i think united will struggle against aston villa and a draw looks the most likely outcome. It appears that some players hope that international week will help but i’m unsure..its a worrying period for man utd especially seeing the that their manager has been this position so often yet has not sorted out this current problem…any thoughts?
