Remember that time we had the best keeper in the EPL…

By: Taylor Rockwell | August 10th, 2009

…and then he made one mistake and we sold him to Everton for 30 cents on the dollar… or pound… or whatever? That was good planning, seeing as United now have three… no two…. okay, one and a half fit and capable goalkeepers to start the season off.

Following a performance that would have made Massimo Taibi proud, 26 year old Ben Foster was pulled out of the England squad that will face Holland this week. Foster suffered body-knack following a collision with Didier Drogba that allowed Chelsea to notch their first goal, and the goalkeeper now appears to be questionable for United’s opener against Birmingham.

My guess is that this was simply a preventative move, as the Holland match is only a friendly and Fergie probably wouldn’t look to kindly on Capello forcing a semi-injured player to go out and risk a more permanent disability. More to the point, despite the rather shambolic performance yesterday, I remain confident that Foster will prove a more than capable replacement for Edwin Van der Sar (at least, in the short term). Is that based primarily on the match against Derby two years ago when he made two phenomenal saves? Pretty much, yeah. Is that a decent justification for supporting a player that looked incapable of using his left foot yesterday? Uh… no comment…

If he’s left footed and yesterday was any indicator, then I would be very sad to see him try to use the right…

As an American & Utd. fan, I was gutted when Howard was sold on. That said, Howard has his fair share of dodgy moments, too. Foster will come good though, I think. I doubt he’s good enough long term, but he’ll buy us some time.
