Possebon Loaned; Fergie Apparently Hates Central Midfielders
By: Taylor Rockwell | July 21st, 2009
So, this is a bit belated, but it appears that Rodrigo Possebon has been loaned to Sporting Braga. The Portuguese side finished fifth in the Liga Sagres (thereby qualifying for the Euro League… or UEFA Cup… or whatever the hell it is that Arsenal will soon find themselves competing in).
The young Brazilian featured primarily in Carling Cup matches last season, and had his playing time further reduced by a rather nasty tackle from Boro’s Emanuel Pogatetz. Nevertheless, he did get a pretty sweet song from the Old Trafford faithful (KC and the Sunshine Band would be proud).
This was officially announced two weeks ago, so the only reason why I’m bringing it back up is to once again start the conversation about our midfield. It was never all that likely that Possebon was going to figure consistently this term, and there’s no doubt that a spell in Portugal will increase his abilities (on and off the ball). United need another creative midfielder to compliment players like Carrick, Fletcher, and (ideally) Hargreaves, and Possebon could end up filling that role rather nicely.
What this loan deal does demonstrate is that Fergie has a fair amount of faith in the youth/depth of his squad. With no Possebon or Hargo, we still have Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson, and Gibson. Not exactly world beaters there, but still a demonstration of the size of this United squad. I’m increasingly comfortable with the team as they go about the business of defeating semi-talented Asian teams. Perhaps that’s because I’ve been drinking a fair amount of Kool-Aid recently, perhaps not.

if pogatetz wasnt a complete two legged not care a shit tackler possebon would still be with us this season. i think he wouldve played more and more…taking a chunk of anderson’s if not fletcher or carrick minutes last season as he progessed. now he needs seasoning in a year where we can’t afford to be trotting out too many guys who need that. this is back to the whole our midfield isnt good enough thing and i believe it 100%. it’s getting to a point of irritation when other people don’t. we were thoroughly outclassed by barca, got dominated by liverpool, drew with the scolari led chelsea that sucked early in the year and the obvious reason was the lack of any world class midfielders. i have a sense of dread of finishing third this year unless hargreaves is back early and plays often, fletcher and carrick make big improvements, and anderson plays about opposite of what he did last year. those are some big ifs.

I’m not really worried…Fergie knows what he’s doing and with the departure of Ronaldo the whole team’s tactics will change. Maybe Fergie doesn’t think he needs to add to the midfield based on his plans for next season.

the middle field is weak , due to the lack of a hard player , Fletcher has fire in his playing but not enough skill , he can not be Roy Kean , our United need a leader like Keano ! just imagine if we have Gattuso or Viera ..
Owen Hargreave have no worthed contribution to team ! waiting for his show in next aprreance .—————–

I think a central midfielder is needed if we are to win the league next season. A player like Cambiasso would be ideal.

Obertan is the next Slivestre in the “French players with huge noggins” category.
