Possebon Loaned; Fergie Apparently Hates Central Midfielders
By: Taylor Rockwell | July 21st, 2009
So, this is a bit belated, but it appears that Rodrigo Possebon has been loaned to Sporting Braga. The Portuguese side finished fifth in the Liga Sagres (thereby qualifying for the Euro League… or UEFA Cup… or whatever the hell it is that Arsenal will soon find themselves competing in).
The young Brazilian featured primarily in Carling Cup matches last season, and had his playing time further reduced by a rather nasty tackle from Boro’s Emanuel Pogatetz. Nevertheless, he did get a pretty sweet song from the Old Trafford faithful (KC and the Sunshine Band would be proud).
This was officially announced two weeks ago, so the only reason why I’m bringing it back up is to once again start the conversation about our midfield. It was never all that likely that Possebon was going to figure consistently this term, and there’s no doubt that a spell in Portugal will increase his abilities (on and off the ball). United need another creative midfielder to compliment players like Carrick, Fletcher, and (ideally) Hargreaves, and Possebon could end up filling that role rather nicely.
What this loan deal does demonstrate is that Fergie has a fair amount of faith in the youth/depth of his squad. With no Possebon or Hargo, we still have Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson, and Gibson. Not exactly world beaters there, but still a demonstration of the size of this United squad. I’m increasingly comfortable with the team as they go about the business of defeating semi-talented Asian teams. Perhaps that’s because I’ve been drinking a fair amount of Kool-Aid recently, perhaps not.
