Neville retires
By: Shaun | February 3rd, 2011
The biggest United fan who actually got to live the dream and play for the club has finally called it a day. It was only a matter of time and the only thing surprising about the announcement was that it happened suddenly out of the blue right at the end of January as opposed to waiting till the end of the season. I don’t believe he would have featured in enough games to warrant a medal at the end of the season anyway, so it’s not like he shortchanged himself. However, in recent seasons, his contribution in the locker room has probably outweighed his production on the field.
The gaffer along with a host of other folks (Wenger, BFF Becks among those) in the footballing world have come out proclaiming Neville as the best English rightback/defender in the PL era. Can’t say I disagree. However, what endears Gary to my heart more than his know how on the field or his defensive determination is his sheer fanaticism displayed for the club. It was never more evident than after our thrilling win against City last season.
Thanks Gary. You were an example to many of what it meant to put on the famous red shirt. You were never just an employee and player of the club, but a die hard fan that gave everything.
Once a red devil, always a red devil.
ps-he looks freakishly like Ribery in that first picture…
