Man Utd Ramblings – Should Ronaldo Be Rested Against Fulham?

By: Wayne Farry | March 5th, 2009

The last time I did one of these was before the game at West Ham. That was a while ago but hell, why not do it again? It’s ideal to post one of these when there’s not much going on and besides the Ronaldo/Taylor pussy-fight yesterday (which Rob already talked about) there’s nothing going on today. So I’m doing it now.

Going first with the title subject. A mate and I were having a chat in college today about United’s upcoming matches. My mate is a Mancunian and an avid United fan. We were talking about the Fulham match in the FA Cup at the weekend and the Inter match in the Champions League on Wednesday. Basically, he suggested that Ronaldo be rested for the Fulham match so to ensure sharpness for our biggest match of the season so far; Inter at Old Trafford on Wednesday. I was thinking about it and it makes sense. Only Nemanja Vidic has played more for United than Ronaldo this season; Ronaldo having made 38 appearances (including 4 sub apps.), while Vidic has made 39 appearances (including 3 sub apps.). If it weren’t for Ronaldo’s early season injury he’d have played about 7 more games by now. Vidic has been rested on a fairly regular basis while Ronaldo has been an ever present since returning from injury. Of course, Evans is there as a replacement for Vidic, while there isn’t any top-grade stand-ins for Ronnie. But it just seems after playing 15 straight games that Ronaldo could do with a rest, ready to come out swinging against the Nerazurri on Wednesday. United should be able to cope without him against the Cottagers (haha, Cottagers), of course they have a good home record but we still should beat them, I don’t care what anyone says. If Ron picked up an injury at Craven Cottage it’d be a real blow for Wednesday night. Playing him could be an unnecessary risk.

Tell me what you think. I was gonna create a poll but can’t get it on here, so post your opinion in the comments section.

Secondly, a cool wee thing over at the United Official Website. They have a video of classic games between United and Fulham and Craven Cottage. Among others, it features Giggsy’s stunning volley from the 06/07 season. It’s such a fucking unbelievable goal. Check out the video here. You may have to be registered to view it though.

Other tidbit, Fabio scored the winner in a reserve match against ‘Boro tonight. Dunno if it’s his first goal but still a good thing.

Fuck, there really is nothing going on today…

Makes sense to rest him…but he’ll play. I remember someone suggesting that Ronaldo had agreed with Ferguson that he would stay if he was played in every game. While this is obviously just speculation there may be a grain of truth to it.

I can see what you’re getting at martin. He’s clearly a guy who loves to play football. You always hear that he’s always in Fergie’s ear on the bench to bring him on if he’s not playing, even in the ’smaller’ matches.

Although I think he shouldn’t, he probably will start.

Fulham is sneaky-scary, I wouldn’t take them lightly. Get CR7 60 minutes at least and only take him off if we’ve got the lead. He’s young enough that he should be able to recuperate fully, especially against an Inter team that probably will be on their back foot often.

Ronaldo must be rested, otherwise he might actually become a real slave.

Dangit, that blasted ‘Cottagers’ thing distracted me. Again.

Ya I agree .. Ronaldo has played just about every game since he came back.. and more so in the last weeks.. as much as FA cup is important to United.. the games coming next week are massive .. also due to the fact that United have played one game less than their rivals.. it makes the point difference a little less than what it actually should be :-) .. and that would play on all players’ mind no matter what SAF says

United’s great run has to end somewhere. Right now the players are feeling invincible, that they can beat any team, and will probably start slacking off. This should set off alarm bells as they have not been winning as comfortably as they think in the last few games, often by one goal margins.

Put him on the bench, just in case park/nani cant get it done.

Rooney being back is a huge relief.

moneybonzai; Regardless of how well they’re doing or how many teams they’re beating Ferguson’s never gonna let them slack off. He’s had teams who’ve had records like this before, there’s no chance they’re gonna slack off.

    Of that I’m sure.

Guys, we don’t need Ronaldo against Inter. Inter is a joke. We can ply 2nd string and beat them 5-0. We are soo much superior to them. No worries. I thought fulham’s game would be harder than inter. Why is this the biggest game? They are a joke haha. We need to rest players against inter so we can prepare for liverpool.
