Man Utd Ramblings – CL Talk
By: Wayne Farry | May 26th, 2009It’s all starting to build up now. Every which way you turn you see, hear or…er…smell something about the Champions League Final. It’s being covered almost around the clock by Sky Sports News and has huge coverage on almost every sports site. So, it seems fitting to take a look today at the different Champions League Final-related stories doing the rounds online.
Firstly, the Guardian has an interview with striker Dimitar Berbatov as he speaks about his European failure in the past and how it still gets to him to this day.
Again from the Guardian, Kevin McCarra puts forward an intriguing idea; had Veron been born six years later and signed for United in 2007 as a twenty six year old he would be the final piece of the puzzle at Old Trafford, and describes how Veron is behind our European success.
The Times Online states that the manager of the winning side tomorrow night will be given a leading role in the trophy presentation.
The Times Online also shows where they think the Final will be won and lost.
Brilliantly, The Sun reports that if Anderson scores his first goal for the club in Rome on Wednesday he’s going to strip, interesting…

Wayne, I was literally 30 seconds away from posting an identical column… well played… so I’ll just say that the Berba interview was a bit telling. It’s an interesting read, if only because you get the sense that Berba is a bit conflicted on his own role/value with United. At different times in the interview he acknowledges that he needs to get better, will only make the choice to improve if Sir Alex demands it of him, doesn’t care what people think, does care what people think, sometimes gets playfully slapped in the face by Fergie, and is so good that he doesn’t even need to show effort.
Additionally, have you seen Ando’s celebration after we secured the Premiership? Uh… the armed forces will be none too thrilled… http://ballhype.com/video/manchester_united_anderson_marching/

Aw sorry man, yeah I’ve just read through the interview now. Interesting stuff. He does seem like the type of guy who doubts himself. Maybe that’s just the way I see him, but much of the stuff in that didn’t surprise me.
One interesting thing though is that he’s thinking what a lot of United fans are thinking in terms of his value to the team. It’s good to know that footballers think about that sort of stuff too, as opposed to assuming a value to the team based solely on the fact that they bought him.

But the bits about him not caring seemed strange, didn’t they? I think there are two different times when he says he doesn’t care/is happy with his performance, and then immediately contradicts himself. Perhaps that’s just the interviewer’s editing, but he seems like he’s definitely doubting himself. Hopefully, he won’t be forced to take a penalty… I remember what Anelka’s face looked like last year, and I don’t want to see Berba with a similar frown on Wednesday.

Yeah, you’re right but he won’t be forced to take a penalty. We have loads of good penalty takers and I doubt that Fergie would ever pressure someone into taking one.
