Kia Joorabchian: My Property is For Sale

By: Taylor Rockwell | February 20th, 2009

ESPN is reporting that Carlos Tevez is set for a free summer transfer after United failed to make his loan deal permanent. Kia Joorabchian, the representative for the thirteen inch tall striker, declared today that Tevez is “studying other options”. That statement may be a bit confusing for readers, so you have to remember that Joorabchian is, at all times, wearing an eye patch, set in a sinister chair, and stroking a creepy looking cat.

Shortly before plotting to take control of Bolivia’s water supply (yes, that’s a James Bond reference), the agent/slave owner/businessman took time to declare, “Carlos is in the market now that United have not made any move for him. We are now studying other options and interested parties. There is no option left with United any longer.”

An interesting statement to be certain. My first inclination was that the man is just trying to stir-up interest in his property, given that Tevez recently put all this drama to rest when he declared, “My mind is pointing me towards United and my plan is to stay here for several years more. I’ve already talked to the club and now we’ll have to wait and see what happens in June. We talked but I’ve signed nothing yet. I want to stay. It would be difficult for me to quit one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

On second viewing, however, it seems highly logical that Tevez would use his agent as a mouthpiece to remind high-level clubs that he 1) still exists and 2) doesn’t particularly enjoy being a third choice attacker. Reports have linked Lil’ Carlitos with King Franco FC and Jose Mourinho’s Current Team (the one that we will be destroying sometime next week), and it seems a shrewd tactic to remind his admirers that a world class striker could soon be available… for free.

“Which way is Madrid? That way? Okay. Great. Thanks!”

I don’t really like to get caught up in all of this drama, as it is often newspapers trying to drum up stories to sell papers. However, the fact that nearly all the United fans I’ve spoken to feel he deserves a new contract and significant first team opportunities indicates that perhaps this story rings a little more true than I would like to admit.

Well, he wouldn’t go for free in the summer: whatever club he moves to will have to pay Kia-Ora(bchian) for his contract. That’s why he’s announcing that Tevez is now a free-for-all — he’s just trying to milk as much money out of him as possible.

I wonder why this never happens with dudes like Scott Parker…

I didn’t mean “free” in that sense… more so in the sense that we lose a world class player and don’t get anything out of it… I consider that a lose-lose…

OK, but my basic point was that I don’t think Tevez is engineering interest in his services that blatantly. I might be wrong, but he doesn’t strike me as that type of person.
More worrying would be the apparent £10m already paid for his 2 year loan. If United have now lost the option of paying the remaining £20m+ for his permanent signature, what does that mean Gill thinks Tevez will be worth in the open market? Less than the £20m he’s not willing to stump? That’s playing dangerously.

Okay, so he goes to Madrid. Does he really get more first team action in front of Raul, RvN, Higuian, and Huntelaar?

Does he really fit in Mourinho’s preferred 4-3-3? He will certainly not be displacing Ibrahimovic.

Given Rooney’s penchant for injury, he might get more first team action at United. Wouldn’t make much sense to me if he left.

This is gonna be long… okay… I think Tevez definitely does want to stay at United. The issue in the past was definitely about playing time. However, as Colin said, Rooney’s injury allowed him more opportunities and his improved performances have led to a more balanced attack (where Rooney, Tevez, and Berba can be paired/switched depending on the opponent).

The present issue seems to be more about why United (Ferguson) won’t spend the £20m. If you’re a world class player and your club doesn’t want to spend the money, it means they don’t rate you. And if they don’t rate you, you’re bound to get angry eventually.

So, Tevez may play a small role in Joorabchian’s actions today. More likely is the monetary motivator. United have already paid £10-12 million for Tevez. If they don’t sign him, then his fee will probably go back up to around £32 million. So, in effect, Joorabchian will make an additional 40% if/when Tevez gets purchased. Therefore, it only makes sense to throw out names like Inter and Real, because if it looks like the big fish are swimming, then the others will soon follow.

All that said, if United don’t pony up the cash, I would not be the least bit surprised to see Tevez wearing light blue next season… like Citeh wouldn’t throw £35-40 million his way…

I wonder how he would like Milan…. We have lots of Argentinians at Inter – he would fit right in.

I think part of the hold up, is that Fergie doesn’t want to stump over a wad of cash to a shady individual.

Say it was a club, let’s use Fulham as an example. Buying players from other clubs fosters good business. Fulham sets a price you negotiate and eventually hammer out a deal. In the future, they might be more likely to deal with you.

Well what does 20M quid get you with this chap? Sure you get Tevez (who I think is quite worth it), but no goodwill along with the deal.

    Just a thought.

And I think Tevez is fighting a losing battle here… who does he take out of the team..
Berbatov? Fergie thinks, rightly, that he gives an extra edge to the team… not only with his holding ability but with his height and heading ability…he will never be able to grow taller!
Rooney?? This is United and they’re English… who’d the fans and want more..one of their locals or an Argentine? Fergie thinks rightly that Rooney is slightly better, and with Ronney being an automatic if he is injury free. there goes that spot..
Ronaldo? no way..unless he leaves this season end.wich is quite possible… if that’s case its extremely important for United to retain Tevez..with the amount of time Rooney’s injured every year we would not be able to cope with two losses like that

we had all 4 of them out there for like 30 min today against blackburn. wasnt anything electric really though. you can chalk that up to them never all being on the field at once though i suppose.

I think Gill will stump up the cash to keep Tevez, unless Manucho fires like a MK47 at Hull and keeps Brown’s side in the top 10, and Campbell starts getting games in Redknapps side, and scores( which is highly unlikely with their squad having, Pav, Keane, Bent and Defoe), we need a third top quality striker.

Although Tevez says he doesn’t like playing off the bench, and neither does Rooney, i think he’d prefer to play in 30+ games for Man United than 15 games for Real Madrid or 38 for Man City. (In Fact, Rooney seems to pop up and score whenever he comes off the bench, maybe they would do a good job playing 60-30 splits for a month or so; eg: Rooney plays 60min for 1 game, and Tevez plays 30, then next game, Tevez takes 60min and Rooney 30. It’ll keep both players snappy, making sure they take chances, score goals, increase productivity and efficiency)
Unless the seemingly unsettled Benzema is indeed leaving Lyon for UNited, or Real( who then release Hunterlaar to UNited), Tevez must stay, as he is to good to let go, and not so good so as to play out of position. Yes, playing a 4-3-3 would be awesome with him and Rooney flanking Berbatov, Ronaldo, Manucho or Welbeck, but it cuts out a part of play that has brought United many goals over the years, and that is the wings. Playing narrow football, like Chelscum, and Arsenal, is predictable, defendable, somewhat boring and simply put, Not the UNited way. I would love to see UNited play 3-4-3, with Rio, Vida, and Evans in defence, then 2 wingers, 2 CM’s and a CDM, behind Rooney, Berba and Tevez.
