June 15 – Transfer Rumors
By: Taylor Rockwell | June 15th, 2009
The Guardian is reporting that contract talks between Carlos Tevez and Manchester United are nearing an end, but not in a good way. Despite Fergie “interrupting his holiday” to twice ring him, the Argentinean goal scorer appears poised to join up with Citeh due, in large part, to an offered 75% pay raise. There’s also something about playing time and overall respect, but I couldn’t hear it over the sound of £140,000-a-week being thrown in Tevez’s direction.
So, it appears United are back in the market for a striker… and, according to Soccernet, they’re fully prepared to land one using their money from the Slave deal. Reports indicate that Fergie is preparing a British transfer record £45 million bid for the talented Valencia striker David Villa. I’m personally not putting a lot of stock in this one, as my guess is that when 1) Villa says he wants to remain in Spain and 2) one former Spanish giant is currently spending more money than Slave at an STD specialist’s clinic, he probably won’t be electing to uproot for the greater Manchester area.
Meanwhile those ever reputable sources over at Goal.com are indicating that United will bid on a Spanish striker, but one found a bit closer to home. The webpage sites a source who claims Manchester will soon launch a £40 million bid for Liverpool star Fernando Torres. Shortly after the bid is put in, hell will (apparently) get really, really cold.
Two players who won’t be going anywhere are Nemanja Vidic (awesome) and Gary Neville (no shit). Vidic’s name was being thrown around as the next Franco FC transfer target, and Neville was linked with a player-coach role at newly relegated Boro. Both men have come out and committed themselves to United for the coming campaign. So, Vidic is committed to playing nearly every match and Neville is content to try to repeat as a Carling Cup Champion.
Lastly, The Guardian’s Andy Hunter thinks that the Valencia bid could be a rather large gamble for United. Two important points to remember (as Hunter points out) is that 1) Valencia may inherit the title of best Manchester United-centric Michael Jackson lookalike and 2) he’s also £1 million cheaper than Michael Jackson Lookalike runner up Nani. Not sure what that last point indicates, but, for some reason, I’m afraid.

It seems to be a growing trend that players aren’t jumping to come to United and I can’t figure out why. We have won the Prem three years in a row and have been to the finals of the Champions League twice. How are players not running to Old Trafford as fast as they can? It is not like we pay low wages either.
Take a guy like Ribery. He gets a good amount of pub for being a good to great player, but he’s only done it in the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Wouldn’t you want to go to (arguably) the best club in (arguably) the best league in the world where you will feature prominently?
Just don’t get it.

Climate.
The climate of Madrid is dry, warm and pleasant. It’s high altitude and proximity to mountains causes some wide variations in winter and summer temperatures. In summer the heat at midday can be intense, with pleasantly cool evenings. Winters, by contrast, bring temperatures dropping to just below freezing. Rain in Madrid is a rarity, with a short rainy season in late October and some
As with the rest of the United Kingdom, Manchester’s climate is highly changeable and unpredictable. In general, however, the weather in Manchester is mild, with sunny summers and cold, wet winters. Snowfall is infrequent, but winter days can be frosty and clear. High-pressure systems can sometimes cause very hot summer temperatures or very cold winter temperatures, but these tend to pass quickly. The average temperature in January is around 39°F (4°C), while the average temperature in July is about 59°F (15°C).

Yeah, but Manchester has way more smog… that’s a positive right?
Colin, you’re from Pittsburg… you’d fit in well in Manchester… when was the last time you saw the sun? 2003?
The point is, you’re going to be hard pressed to get a Spanish player (in his prime) to depart a club for England, especially when other Spanish clubs are in for the asking.

I guess that is a good point, Spain to Manchester would be tough, but it is one of the best operations in the world. I just get a bit unnerved when you don’t hear any of the big players saying “I would love to play for United” this summer. I suppose it is still early as well.
In Pittsburgh, it is 80 degrees AND sunny today for our Stanley Cup parade!

Torres? These so-called journalists need to try a little harder. At least make it believable.

If Tevez goes to City I’ll never forgive the guy. All this talk from him that he loves the fans but he crosses the great divide there’s no going back. United fans will never forgive him.

To be honest, United haven’t exactly treated him with respect, and maybe he really like living in Manchester? I know I did. [/devil's advocate]

Wayne will cut a bitch… for real… The thing with most of these “breaking news” bits is that they rarely (if ever) feature actual quotes from the players… I don’t believe the Guardian article ever actually quotes Tevez, but simply comments on the speculation… It gets a bit old…

Anyone see Rossi’s goals for Italy tonight? Also does anyone believe that we have a buy-back clause for him? The BBC coverage came out with that like its fact, I didn’t think anyone really knew?

am i the only one who really does not want ribery? incredibly overpriced for someone about to begin the back 9 of his career.
i still want to go after a bayern munich winger though. what would be wrong with going after schweinsteiger for much cheaper?

I’m not convinced that Schweinsteiger has the talent to replace Ronaldo, or that he’d even be any better than any of our current options. Ribery certainly has talent, but is older than Ronaldo, not as good, and for some reason will cost almost as much / more if some sources are to be believed.
All I can say is trust in Fergie, he knows what he’s doing.

if we let Tevez go then we need to go all out for two strikers and Benzema has to be one of them.
