Jonny Evans will come good

Jonny-Evans-006Before I get berated for an upcoming post about our defense and how it could be perceived as Jonny Evans bashing, let me just say that I’ve still got that tiny ounce of belief that he will eventually come good. Whether it’s this season or the next, it’ll happen.

As a reminder, Jonny Evans was a part of our rearguard that made history in the 2008/2009 season going over a thousand minutes without conceding a league goal. Granted, he didn’t play in every one of those games, but featured in a good amount of them that he can take some credit for that accomplishment. Rio was out with a back spasm and SAF brought in Evans who did well (or we wouldn’t have had the record to begin with) when called upon. SAF was glowing in his praise of Evans saying, “Jonny is an outstanding player. We are fortunate to have such a talented boy to call on. At 20 he shows such maturity. He reads the game well, he uses the ball well and his pace is good. He has all the attributes of a top player.”

All the attributes of a top player.

SAF himself said that. So, he knows that Evans has got what it takes and the current slump he finds himself in is due, not to a lack of talent or ability, but confidence.

Besides, could we really turn on a United player who did this:
drogba

Resulting in this:
drogba2

I think not.

johnny evans has obvious potential... for uniteds' sake, i agree with u that this might just be a temporary dip of his form. i admired evans in 08/09 and i still do. he is still young. and with smalling looking more comfortable as part of the united back four, maybe we'll end up with 2 top defenders instead of 1.

Evans has the potential to be a class player but after watching yesterdays match and seeing him standing, ball watching on the first goal (and not really marking anyone), and then being outpositioned on the second goal I think its fair to say that his performance was very poor as has been the case throughout the season.

If he doesn't start performing much better for the remainder of the season the manager may have to look to bring in another central defender as cover.

Jonny Evans is a friggin liability and he has already lost us the Carling Cup and several other games. Smalling is already streets ahead in half a season.
