Guillermo Varela: Moyes’ first signingBy: Ian | June 7th, 2013
Be honest, you were just waiting to hear this news, right? It is reported, and indeed is true, that Manchester United have signed young Uruguayan defender Guillermo Varela. And the first thing you might say is….”I’ve never heard of him.” You would be forgiven. He is signed from Club Atlético Peñarol, of the Uruguayan league, having made, if my research is correct, just one senior appearance for them. The fee? Not revealed exactly, but it is believed to be somewhere in the region of £1-2.5m. So you have to say there isn’t a lot of risk in the amount. What else do we know? He’s 20 and he’s a Uruguay Under-20’s representative. He has apparently spent a bit of time at Utd’s training ground towards the tail end of last season, so how much of this signing is Moyes’ sole decision is perhaps not clear cut (doesn’t really matter, given the price). Also, he is a full-back who plays on the right. This tells us something. Now, Rafael is largely accepted as Utd’s first choice right back. That is not going to change with this signing, Varela is a back-up player with hopes for good development. I think you could now firmly say, if you couldn’t before, that Utd are well covered in the ‘young defender’ department.
So, what do we think about this signing? Is defence really where Utd need to be looking for additions?
