Congratulations to Portsmouth and the Other Unlikely Semi-Finalists
By: Nick | March 11th, 2008Now that the annoyance of Saturday’s crazy match is over, I feel like it’s time to give props to Pompey and the other three clubs and their fans, who surely can’t have imagined such a thing as a visit to the new Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup semi-finals this season — they must honestly be quite delighted.
A quick visit to Wikipedia reveals the Pompey’s last FA Cup triumph was in 1939, West Brom’s in 1968, Cardiff City’s in 1927 and Barsley’s in 1912. They’re all due!
In the video below, Rio Ferdinand’s admirable attempt to save the penalty sends the Portsmouth faithful into giddy celebrations. Good stuff.

elle : it’s been like that for a long time, if I remember correctly… I mean, I know back in the bad old days (1992-93) the semis were played at Villa Park, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge or another top quality stadium (but not the home or away side’s, mind you)… But I thought that from the 1997-1998 seasons (or around there) Wembley hosted semis…

Elle – It’s all about the FA needing to hold as many high profile events as possible at the new Wembley to pay off the soaring costs it took to build the thing…
