Breaking News: United Accept £80M Ronaldo Bid

By: Wayne Farry | June 11th, 2009

So the saga is all over before it really started. It’s been confirmed today on the official website and on Sky Sports that United have accepted an £80M bid from Madrid for Cristiano Ronaldo. The deal, if it goes through will be a new world record transfer fee, just days after Madrid shattered the old record with their capture of Kaka.

Here’s the club’s official statement on the matter:

“Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.

“At Cristiano’s request – who has again expressed his desire to leave – and after discussion with the player’s representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

“Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice.”

So he’s as good as gone. Can’t say I’m shocked really. Little betrayed by the tanned fool? Perhaps. Certainly surprised that United accepted so quickly, but it’s a lot of money. Anyway, more to come on this later.

Leave your feelings on this below.

Keith, Ribery has the talent of Slave with Tevez’s workrate / tenacity, who wouldn’t pay for that?

Just been watching Sky News, the News of the World sports editor was talking about it and made an interesting point. As he pointed out, it’s fantastic for us that we’ve got this out of the way before the transfer window has even opened. Now we have the whole summer for Fergie to plot and deal for whatever player he wants, or should I say, whatever players he wants.

We can bring in a winger, midfielder and striker with this money, and considering Campbell’s off to Hull and a few other youngsters are on the way out we could have close to £100M to spend this summer. Bring it on!

I am of the opinion that he is quite overrated. TBH I think United will be more dangerous with him gone. Praying you guys dont get Ribery and that he goes to barca instead…. Im an Arsenal fan btw…

I expect Ronaldo to do well without the pressure of leadership- but without fergie keepin him in check I see his ego getting the better of him…

I agree MoMONEY, his ego could go crazy at Madrid. It’ll be interesting to see how Pelligrini handles the big egos there, because if he struggles to contain them he has some serious problems.

It’s a step down for Ronaldo, regardless of what anyone says. Real have two of the best players in the world now on their books but they still have a sub-standard team.

Another point, how will the Madrid team react to this deal? I remember reading a year back that the Madrid team didn’t want Ronaldo at Madrid and that they felt it would disrupt the harmony of the squad. Raul and co. (the originals) don’t appear to be huge fans of los Galacticos so it’ll intriguing to see the effect on the team.

momoney- completely agree. ronaldo won’t be the same without fergie.

wayne- that’s exactly what i was thinking regarding the timing. i think fergie told ronaldo last summer that he would allow him to leave this summer as long as he got enough time to readjust the squad.

keith- excellent point. all the star layers will have inflated price tags bc of the new galacticos and citeh still lurking but i’m hoping that with the purchase of ronaldo, real won’t pursue ribery as much and that will knock his price down. if they do buy ribery, i would not mind getting robben from real on the cheap.

also i hope zlatan ends up going to barca, opening up the way for us to get benzema. it seems like anything is possible with all this money!

yeah, wayne, it was this whole ronaldo pursuit that chased robinho away from real. i can’t imagine even more of the real players will feel that way after all the rumors and signings this summer.

Damn Mo, dont you put your curse on that Ribery.

Haha will Ronaldo be playing centreback vs Barca then? their only defense is Casillas and Taylor’s fav : Ramos.

miele, I reckon Fergie said to Ronaldo a while ago that if Real were still interested he could leave this summer. That’s why Ron didn’t make much of a fuss about it lately and why Fergie hasn’t commented on it much.

I also have a feeling that Florentino Perez has a good working relationship with Gill, Fergie and United. The guy paid something like €35M for Becks so the guy doesn’t seem to cheat clubs out of money for their players.

I think Fergie was far happier dealing with Perez than with that bastard Calderon.

I must say, I didn’t think this would happen so soon. I always imagined Slave staying until Fergie left. Even if the lad can be a real wanker, it is hard to swallow. He is a great player and did some great things for the club.

It will be difficult to replace him, but in the end I think this may make us a better TEAM since we won’t rely on Ronaldo’s skill so much.

While it is very exciting that we have all this cash to splash, hopefully we don’t get raked over the coals for players. We can’t overspend just because we have the cash.

This is a serious moment in the history of the club. It is very important Fergie buys well (which I am sure he will), but if we try and replace him with players like Anderson and Nani, we may take a step back. I think he is imperative we sign a big name like Ribery.

All in all, it is still hard to get over. I think he hurts because he really raked us over the coals and in the end he held the club ransom and got what he wanted. It will be interesting to see how that team plays and if they can even win anything. They have a whole new squad to incorporate and will have massive expectations.

In the end, most importantly, I am still proud to support United and surely Ronaldo will look back at this day and realize he took a big step back in his career.

I’m on a job site until this afternoon, but I just wanted to say that this is in the top 15 of my favorite United moments… And I love that Madrid think they’ve bought a winger… Good luck with that…

I think they’ll accept it as a positive thing. If I were them I’d find it very disrespectful the way he’s acted and although they’ll miss him I’m sure they realise it’s for the best. At least I hope they do.

I would think guys like Neville, Scholes, and Giggs will almost be happy he is gone. It has to be a tough pill to swallow when you give you life to a club and someone comes in and is a massive individualist.

Maybe this will convince Nani to move along too…

Colin, maybe, just maybe it might help Nani come out of Ronaldo’s shadow. Maybe he might see this as his opportunity to take Ronaldo’s place.

I bet Nike is cursing this too, having to see him wear Adidas and all.
