BREAKING NEWS: HARGO DONE FOR THE SEASON

By: Taylor Rockwell | November 11th, 2008

The Manchester United website is reporting that Owen Hargreaves will miss the remainder of the season. Hargreaves will take the remainder of the season to recover from successful knee surgery performed earlier this week in the United States

According to ESPN Soccernet, “A course of injections has done nothing to free Hargreaves of an injury that, in April, he claimed he might never be rid of, and, he will be left to recover from one operation while another (on his left knee) is planned.”

The 27 year old has struggled with injury even since his arrival at Old Trafford from Bayern Munich. This injury must force two questions. What does this mean for the current United squad and their fate this season and, perhaps more importantly, what does this mean for the Canadian-born midfielder. His performance for England in the 2006 World Cup peaked the interest of United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. However, he has been unable to hammer down a spot in the starting XI and has struggled with injuries in all of his past three seasons.

It now seems that there is more than a Carling Cup victory resting on the shoulders of Rodrigo Possebon. Could a solid performance today give him an opportunity to start later? Only time will tell.

Indeed. Like I said in the match preview, perhaps tonight’s game against QPR will go a long way towards deciding whether or not Possebon/Gibson can come close to replacing him.
