Babel’s Bobble

By: Simon James | September 14th, 2008

As a Manchester United fan there is nothing much worse than losing to Liverpool. Even St£vie G and Carragher’s sulky countenances were lifted to unfamiliar grins for half an hour after the game (before, of course, their houses were burgled again for the fourth time that day). Rafa gave a wide-eyed and incredulous interviews stating that Liverpool were now serious title contenders, all the while trying to convince himself of the fact at the same time. All contributed to a very sad day for the Red half of Manchester. The only thing to console us was Berbatov and Tevez looking pretty sharp and Ferdinand being a beacon in the midst of a mediocre and mistake ridden performance.

In truth, Liverpool were well worth their win. Make sure you head on over to the Liverpool Offside to offer your congratulations, CSD is doing a fine job over there by the looks of it. They battled hard and were strong in the tackle, they closed down space quickly and harried United in possession. And United didn’t like it on little bit. It was the first time I have seen United physically rattled in a long time. A leader was very much lacking on the day and the 4-3-3 formation did not work when Liverpool worked out that the front three could be harried into losing ball and the back four and midfield were hell-bent on self destruction from 30 minutes onwards. Although Liverpool deserved their win, it had to be Babel, a wide player (Rafa take note), that scuffed in from a mistake to crown a pig of a day. To cap it all, Vidic deserved to go as it was a dangerous lunge, I don’t expect him to start against Villarreal.

However, I do expect one Cristiano Ronaldo to play some part in the first game of our Champion’s League defence. Will he be the same? Will he have one eye on the transfer window? How will the fans react? Will they still love him? All these questions answered and more on Wednesday, which, thank the lord, is another day.

PS Thanks for all the comments from my last post, it’s good to be here, let me know how you want me to retort!

I hope fergie got the same thing out of the match i realized back in CL last year. Scholes and Nani cannot play on the same side of the pitch because they both tend to neglect defensive duties. All in all it was a poor game (somewhat due to that pesky international break) but I expect a much better form for the home fixture of the CL defense.

Good to have you writing, keep up the good work.

Thanks Schaafito, good to be here. I agree on the CL defence, the pace of the game and the reduced physicality will be a welcome release from the Premier League. At least for a few days….

steven i assume you’re a l’pool fan judging by the site i got redirected to. And at least Ronaldo had a legit injury and surgery and didn’t fake something to skip international duty and miraculously get healthy for a huge home fixture (cough gerrard cough torres)

Villareal is a very classy team..we should not take them lightly….the next game against Chelsea just became a little bigger…
If Ronaldo has any sense ..he would sense that all the money is here in the EPL..if that’s what he wants…and this team is pretty much moulded to get the best out of him…if rewards are what he wants…and Sir Alex will want to go into retirement on a high…if being successful is what he wants :D

Not like United players have ever been “injured” for international duty either, eh Schaafito?

Welcome to the team mate. Glad to have ya, you have quite a full plate to handle jumping into ManU, best of luck; just not against Rovers.

great post, but seriously…there is no chance I will ever congradulate liverpool

one advantage we have against villareal is that most of their strikers are out of commision, or at least they were as of a few days ago. should be a good game

Thanks all, lots more to come…however
Steven – what? Was that an unveiled Ronaldo is gay joke? Have you read the papers lately?
Schaafito – Gerrard and Torres didn’t start but were VERY suspicious in their abscense. But Alessio is right, Fergie does it ll the time. Especially with Giggs and my beloved Wales.
Spenser – Oh yes, definitely a legitimate goal but look at the replay, he scuffed it into the floor so it takes a bounce as he hits it. Technique or fortuitous bobble? Hmm…..
Jim – Many thanks, looking forward to the Lancashire derby
Elle – Thanks for the heads up, I will be doing a match preview over the next couple of days, keep reading and commenting!
