Another Poll: Who is the Most Dreaded Champions League Opponent?
By: Nick | March 11th, 2008It’s fairly obvious most of us would prefer to meet Schalke, Fenerbahçe and then probably Roma in the next round.
My skeptical nature figures we won’t be fortunate enough to get one of those clubs — so who is it that you really don’t want to see?

As a fan of Manchester United in the EPL, and Roma in Serie A (Yeah, last year was a nightmare for me… what are the chances?) I’d honestly say that Roma is way more dangerous this year than most Man. Utd fans might take them to be based off last years performance. Overall however, I think Manchester’s worst opponent to draw would be either Arsenal or Barca.

Roma were highly impressive against Real Madrid for sure — but I’d still prefer them over the four in the poll!

Hmmm. For one reason or another, I feel as though Roma would trash Liverpool, & would try to dazzle Arsenal with their passing game. (Arsene Wenger had heaps of praise for Roma at the beginning of the 07/08 season, and I’m sure the team would remember that going into a game) Also Barcelona is on a bad run of form, and are losing players left and right. Messi is out for a while, so if anything, NOW is the time to play Barca.

My dad works with a factory full of Liverpool fans in North Wales — he’ll be pretty upset if we get them.
For the simple reason that it’s all good if we won, but he’d never hear the end of it if we lost!

Haha. Liverpool v Manchester United in the final? I don’t think it can be much more epic than that for any fans of the English game.

I’m hoping the draw will pit us against a non English team. that way at least it will be entertaining to watch a CL match and not feel like we’re back in the EPL. and I think Barca are still dangerous. many are talking about Messi being out but that still leaves Eto’o, Henry, Ronaldinho, Deco and co. and really they have a deep squad of players that would be considered starting XI material if they played anywhere else. so yes they may be having a bad run in the league but I don’t count them out and still see them as a threat.

Jina — you’re absolutely right, Barcelona are a danger. La Liga form means nothing right now. Liverpool prove this — it’s a cup competition, so regardless of Messi, Barcelona are a very very strong club. Beyond Liverpool (purely for sentimental reasons) Barcelona are a team I don’t want to meet at all…

Losing to Liverpool would be the worst thing possible in football.

I would agree with Bellend. I think most United fans would be devastated losing to Liverpool. Not only is there the local rivalry but Man Utd would not want to be seen to be falling further behind in the number of times the cup is won by Liverpool, which is one possible consequence of losing to Liverpool in the competition.

in my opinion i think the worst will be liverpool cause if you look at whats to come liverpool only has the uefa to go for were we (united )have the league as well so do the rest of the other big clubs even the blues still have a good chance in the league if untied and the gunners slip up which is probably never going to happen i think barca are a really good side but i dont see them as being a bigger treat then liverpool even thou i dont think they capable to beat united this season but they have a differnt beliefe in the champions league so i will be praying not to meet liverpool in the 1/4 finals
hope youll will toPosted from

As a neutral I’m saying now, I will eat my hat if one English team isn’t in the final!
I think Man U – Barca in the next round would be a great game.
Of everyone I want Arsenal to win it though for two reasons; one is that Arsenal is such a big club and it’s a shame that they’ve never won the Champions League (they were robbed against Barca!)and also I desperately wish for Arsene Wenger to win it as he has everything else on his c.v. except it.

Either Barca or Arsenal. Arsenal will be up against you for their failure (as well as frustration) to let PL race slip in your hands and revenge (4-0). Barca aren’t doing well back at home and Rijkaard can only save his job if he manages CL tophy.
Had Chelsea been managed by Mourinho till now then I would have said Chelsea given their hunger. But AG isn’t tactically good to beat quality oppositions like Man Utd.
Liverpool are your bunnies. If you draw against L’pool then expect win in both the legs.
I hope its Man Utd. vs Liverpool
