A Preview of the Derby v. United Preview
By: Taylor Rockwell | January 19th, 2009
I was just checking the United website, and came across this bit of rampant speculation… err… newsworthy reporting from the Manchester Evening News. It appears that newly imported Serbian attacker Zoran Tosic may make his first team debut tomorrow night against Derby.
Zoran Tosic is set for a surprise introduction to English football with Sir Alex Ferguson lining him up to make his debut in the Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Derby on Tuesday. The Serbian winger, who was unveiled last week following his move from Partizan Belgrade, was expected to be eased into the United first team. The 21-year-old was not supposed to be introduced for another six weeks with Ferguson wanting to ensure he was prepared for the physical demands of the Premier League. But the United manager has had a rethink and Tosic now looks likely to play some part in the match, which Derby lead 1-0 after the first leg.
My guess is that this article is complete speculation, and that we’ll see a lineup fairly similar to the one we saw against Derby a few weeks ago (with a conspicuous absence of any new players). However, I am always excited to see Fergie incorporate youth into the squad and I would be thrilled to have some new blood running in the midfield. But am I ready to make him my new United man-crush? No. Not yet. I’m still hurting.

Yes… yes he could…

I personally think that Nani has been the architect of his own downfall. But hopefully this guy can be Giggsy’s real replacement.
I don’t know what to expect tomorrow night. I hope Fergie gave these lads the hair-dryer treatment after the debacle at Pride Park.
Players like Anderson and Tevez need to step up here. We should really beat them by a handsome margin..

Nani got the short end of the stick at United. You can really see how Ferguson doesn’t rate him since Carlos left. He’s absolutely out in the cold now.

But he’s never stepped up. He’s shown some glimpses here and there. I can see where you’re coming from though. My brother compares Nani to C-Ron a few years back, little substance and all flash. He thinks that if Sir Alex shows Nani the faith he showed to C-Ron, the result will be just as impressive.
I’m far from convinced though..

I still can’t help but wonder if Nani wasn’t a more tempting buy because Fergie figured he would help settle Slave/make him more likely to stay long term.
As I recall, the two are friends and it would be a lot harder to ditch a team for another when a good friend was on the roster.
That said, I think we’ve seen that Nani definitely has some skill. I don’t understand what exactly Fergie thinks of him. If we wasn’t totally sold, wouldn’t he have loaned him. Or is that only for those players whom he still believes can figure for United in the future and, since he doesn’t believe Nani is one of them, doesn’t see the point in wasting the effort?

Doesn’t he have as many goals this season as he did all of last season? It’s kind of hard to “step up” when you don’t get to play. It’s called “the Tevez treatment”. I haven’t seen anything from Nani that is more rage-inducing than the stuff Darren Fletcher trotted out when he was 22. To me, that makes no sense. I hope he stays because we need 4 wingers as much as we need 4 strikers.

I don’t know if any of you guys spotted this, but Fabio is in the squad, according to BBC! I know we’ve all heard it about a million times about how he is the better of the da Silvas, but even if he turns out to be a decent left back, I’ll be happy to finally get a chance to see him play!
Although I wouldn’t be surprised if some agent tricked Fergie and there really are no da Silva twins at all. Coincidence that only one of them has played while the other one is nowhere to be seen? I think not.

Colin, from what I’ve heard (not much, admittedly, but a bit) Fabio’s supposed to be every bit as good as Rafael. He’s been injured for a good long time now and is only just back.
And I can’t imagine Fergie being duped by a tricky agent. United have scouts located all over the world in almost every region with a football team. So Fergie and his staff would have been extremely well-briefed on both the Da Silva boys.
