Man Utd vs Barca – Flashbacks – #3
By: Wayne Farry | May 26th, 2009I did a similar piece in the buildup to the Arsenal match a short time ago, there wasn’t much response but I enjoyed looking through the old matches and I assume some of you did too. This time, leading up to tomorrow’s Final I will post three videos of memorable Man Utd-Barca games of yore, starting with today.
Man Utd 3 – 3 Barca & Barca 3 – 3 Man Utd (CL Group Stage 1998/99)
So technically, this is two games, but they all occurred in the CL Group Stage back in 98/99. These were probably two of the best games I ever watched as a kid and if possible they made me more in love with football, and United. The games also gave me a profound interest in watching Barcelona. Marvel at Sonny Anderson’s diving and Beckham’s free kick. But especially, the incredible, almost telepathetic play of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke.
More Man Utd vs Barca – Flashbacks to come later. As always with big game buildup, leave any comments or thoughts below.

I never understood the Beckham hate. He always seemed to work his socks off for United. Even today he still supports them. Was it just because of the Fergie / boot incident?

PS – Yorke and Cole remind me a bit of Tevez and Rooney last year.

Colin, the ‘99 season was his best one. He was phenomenal that year: crossing, assists, goals, and even runs — he did it all. However, the treble was the start of his decline: over the next few seasons there was a sense that he just wasn’t putting the work in. Whether that’s true or not I suppose none of us will ever know, but take a look at those treble-year games and Beckham looked like he had a drive that he just couldn’t recreate post-’99. That’s the reason why a lot of Utd fans lost a lot of love for Beckham: even I, who had been a big Beckham admirer, was not too bothered to see him leave and was only mildly disappointed that we didn’t get more than £24m for him.
Still, I, personally, don’t have anything against him, but that’s not true for all Utd fans who certainly didn’t take his professed love for FC Franco all that well (long before the CR fiasco).
