Man Utd vs Barca – Flashbacks – #2
By: Wayne Farry | May 26th, 2009The second of three of our Man Utd vs Barca – Flashbacks comes in the form of the 1991 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final. United won, becoming the first English club to win in Europe since the five year ban after Heysel.
Man Utd 2 – 1 Barca (Cup Winners’ Cup Final 1991)
The game showed both sides of Mark Hughes; the greedy (that’s a good thing) striker who tries to claim every goal and the magician with the ball at his feet. The way he slots home the ball after getting by Carles Busquets is unbelievable.

Don’t know, but it wouldn’t be hard to guess (at least for the people likely to play or feature at some stage):
VdS, Kuzszcszakczk
O’Shea, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Evans, Rafael, Neville/Brown (wont play, either way)
Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Scholes, Park, Nani (maybe Macheda?), Gibson (I’d imagine)
Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, BerbatovThat’s a 20-man squad: it’s been a while since FM, is that right?
After Cruyff lumping us off with the likes of the French and Spanish national teams when moaning about the number of foreigners in the prem, I have to admit that I quietly think “idiot” every time I see him now, even if it is in flashback form.

It was an interesting statement by Cruyff, who lives in Barcelona and was manager of a fairly foreign outfit at FCB…And that from the Barça Offsider…
I think the biggest question is whether or not Berbatov will start. I would think so, but that might open the game up too much for Ferguson’s liking, unless Iniesta and Henry don’t make it, in which case Busi will have to start and, well, that’d be the end of that…

Last season, when everyone was in a knot about Nationalism, I could have forgiven Cruyff; but then it was pointed out that there were more Englishmen in Utd’s squad than Spaniards in Barca’s and as many as Italians in Roma’s etc. and everyone learned a lesson…except Cruyff, apparently. Then again, I don’t really hold it against him too much seeing as I think we’re all idiots really (and some are just more adept at hiding it than others).
Yesterday I would have said that Giggs would have played instead of Berbatov, with CR up the middle, but now I’m not so sure. Maybe SAF’ll play 4-3-2-1 with Park alongside Carrick and Anderson and CR on the right? It might not be that much more open than 4-2-3-1 (or 4-3-2-1) with Giggs and no Berba. Of course, with Roo-berb-aldo on, Park will have to be more defensive, but he’d have had to have been to check Henry/Iniesta/? anyway. Hmm….

Yeah, that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking Ilyich (about the tactical formation)…I mean, do you really let Park push up and then give Iniesta space and time in front of the defense? No way. So it’s gotta be almost a 2 DM setup…Or it could also be something else.
This is why I’m not a manager.
